Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. Prov 20:1 ESV

Is it okay to drink wine or beer? It is allowed for a believer of Christ to drink time and again? Do we have a definitive stand on this aspect of social drinking? The book of Corinthians says everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial. Jesus says nothing outside a man can make him unclean. So, if we will be dogmatic about it, wine and beer won’t make us unclean. The problem are the acts that follows after a person is influenced with wine and strong drink that makes the difference. It says here wine is a mocker, would you like to be one? Psalm 1 says blessed is the man who does sit in the seat of mockers. If avoiding mockers is already described as blessed, how much more avoiding to become one yourself. It also adds strong drink a brawler. Another translation says, beer is a brawler. It makes one person use less his brains than his muscles. Whoever is led away by it is not wise. If people want to drink, they can always find ways of justifying drinking, Jesus drank wine, Jesus transformed water into wine, Paul commanded Timothy to drink a little wine. But if a person is looking at living like Christ and avoiding the chance of falling into drunkenness and the sins that goes along with it, If anyone is more concern about whether he can be a stumbling block to others who are new or not as strong in the faith, he would give up some of what is permissible to those that are beneficial. Not drinking wine for the faith of another and not drinking wine in order not to fall into the sins that goes along with drunkenness is wise Christian living. 30 July
