Trained for action

Writer's picture: Michael CustodioMichael Custodio

When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, 318 of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. Genesis 14:14-15 ESV

Reading the earlier part of chapter fourteen, we will realize that these allied kings had been trying to solidify their forces by joining with other kings. In this particular scenario the king of Sodom had allies that formed a five kingdom pact against four kingdoms trying to wage war with them. The five kingdoms lost with Lot being taken captive for he chose to dwell in the land of Sodom. When Abraham heard this, he lead forth his trained men, 318 of them and he pursued the enemies as far as Dan. What was defeat for five kingdoms, was amazingly won by a single household, and only 318 member at that. Something we need to see here. Abram was training the men under his family. They may not be at war, but it does not mean they won't prepare for one. Abram had no plans on conquering territories nor extending his borders, he was already past that because God already promised him that all the land he sees if he looks to the north, south, east, and west will be his. He made the necessary preparation and training so when the time calls for it, He and his men will be ready. Even before our time comes, we must be making preparations for it. Every day is a chance to improve, every day is an opportunity to develop the discipline and the skills, every day is a chance to equip, train, and let people see they can be a better version of who they were yesterday. Prepare so when your time comes and when you are called for action, you know what to do 5 January
