Return to God

Writer's picture: Michael CustodioMichael Custodio

“Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.

Joel 2:12-13 ESV

Returning to God is an open invitation. He wants his people to return to Him with all their hearts. It does not matter how far they have drifted, nor how long they have lost their ways, He wants them to come back. More that the garments, he want them to rend their hearts. God is not looking for the outward appearance of repentance, he wants the heart of the repentant. What is displayed on the outside is nothing compared to the true condition of the heart. Returning to God is possible because God is gracious. Religious people may be offended by this because they want to attain the favor and forgiveness of God with their efforts but God's grace is freely given. God is full of mercy, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. 30 Nov 2018
