Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, I will go, but if you will not go with me, I will not go.” Judges 4:8 ESV
Here Deborah, the prophetess heard the word of the Lord and she told Barak about it. Barak responded to her, if you will go with me, i will go, if not, i will not go. Here was a judge or Israel's leader who can not make up his mind. He wanted to believe the word of the Lord but the thing is, it was not him who heard from God. He believes Deborah to be a prophetess. He knows she can hear from God, the problem was he was about to wage war from the prophecy of another so he wanted to be sure. He gave the statement to made certain Deborah heard from God. Because if she did indeed heard from the Lord, she will risk at all because God is dependable. But by his actions, the glory will not be given to Barak, Sisera the enemy will be killed by a woman.
Though we can find something negative in the actions of Barak, we can find something good in him as well. What he was not certain of, he wanted to made certain. What was a prophetic word to him that he was unsure of, he wanted to verify. And even if the credit or glory will not be given to him, that is fine as long as deliverance and victory will be attained by the people of God. He was not hungry for credit. He was secure as a leader. He was not after glory nor credit, it does not matter if a girl will take the credit, as long as God grants the victory to the nation of Israel. 13 March
