When David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel. 1 Chron 23:1 ESV
The natural succession when it comes to kings and kingdoms goes like this. When the king dies, the next in line is appointed to power. The subordinates and the people loyal to the king will anoint his son as successor. Here, David did not wait for his death. He did not have to remain king all the days of his life. Especially when one of his sons was trying to steal the throne from his appointed heir, David actively made Solomon king. He made sure there was no confusion among the people of Israel. He wanted them to know that there is no power crisis. Solomon was God's choice and also his choice. He made sure everybody knows that. And while he was still living he made that was communicated clearly and completely. He can rest the remaining days of his life as citizen David not King David. He can rest knowing he had made all preparations for his son to succeed. He was not in competition with the next generation, he positioned the next generation to make it. And to make it a bigger scale than what he has accomplished as king. May we do everything in our power the position the next generation to succeed in their pursuit to follow God and make a difference. 1 May
