But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers' houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid, though many shouted aloud for joy, so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people's weeping, for the people shouted with a great shout, and the sound was heard far away. Ezra 3:12-13 ESV
Two groups of people were making sounds, others were weeping when they saw the foundation of the house were being laid, others were shouting joyful sounds. One thing was happening but the reactions of people differ. Those who saw the destruction of God’s house and are now seeing it being restored were weeping, because somebody has made a decision to make repairs for something that laid waste for quite some time. Some of them remembered the glory days and they can see hope that the house of the Lord can be restored. Those who have not seen it in the past are rejoicing because they will for the time see what it means to worship the Lord in the manner that he prescribed. Whether they were weeping of rejoicing, when God’s house is being built it will move people. 16 May
