Speak to the people of Israel, that they take for me a contribution. From every man whose heart moves him you shall receive the contribution for me. Exodus 25:2 ESV
Amazingly, the scenario before this conversation happened, Moses was on mount Sinai six days being covered by the cloud. On the 7th day, God called to Him in the midst of the cloud and Moses entered the cloud. He was there forty days and forty nights. Then chapter 25 gives us a glimpse of the conversation that was going inside the cloud. For some reason, many people would have thought, what spiritual secrets will God give Moses during this time? What spiritual activity might God say to Moses that will make him deeper in his walk with God? What mystical thing is there hidden among the clouds that God want to tell Him. And Lo and Behold, the first thing that God told Moses is to tell the people to bring God an offering, or in the ESV a contribution. In the Modern English, New King James, and The Young’s Literal Translation of the Bible it was rendered offering. When people talk about giving and generosity, not many people will think of it at something spiritual. They will see it as practical, they might see it as a logical way for God to provide the needs of the ministry. Some preachers, when away from their home churches, when they ask their wife during weekends, how many attended? How much was the offering? Many look at it on the economics’ side and the operation side of the ministry, not as something spiritual. Sometimes, like what happened inside the cloud, when we wait for some mystical secret from God on how to conduct life, he tells us the most basic thing: give, sow generously, meditate on Scriptures, pray, treat your spouse better, play with your kids more, be mindful of your temper, serve don’t be served. When we try to look for deep secrets, we will sometimes be shocked God will tell us the simple ones. 25 January
