So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”Genesis 16:13 ESV
Hagar was running away when God appeared and called to her. This is where Hagar called God El Roi, the God of seeing. Whether things are great or things are running low on fantastic, God sees. In our ups and downs, God sees everything in our lives and about our lives. When Hagar was running from Sarai and was complaining of her situation, God still told her what she needed to hear not what she wanted to hear. What she wanted was consolation, an ally, someone who would agree with what she was doing. God asked her probing questions first. Where have you come from? Where are you going? Then told her to return to her mistress and submit to her. God sees everything going on in our lives. And yes, He watches over us. But it does not mean just because God sees that we will be shielded against trials, difficulties, unfair treatment, hardships. There is no Biblical promise of trouble free Life in Christ. On the other hand, it was the opposite, in the world we will have trouble, but take heart for Christ has overcome the world. What God promised is that we won't have to go through it alone. He will never leave us. We will put our confidence in the one who sees and the one who will never leave us. 6 January
