Thus says the Lord: Do justice and righteousness, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed. And do no wrong or violence to the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place. Jeremiah 22:3
Kids nowadays barely understand the true purpose of commandments. Most of them will see them as rules restricting them the pleasures and joys of life, very few will understand them for what they truly are, a guide to keep them from harm, and a way to lead them to a blessed and fruitful life. Here leaders were instructed to do justice. Teach it, administer it, uphold it, so people can trust the system and the leadership of a land. To deliver from the oppressor him who is robbed. This does not automatically mean side with the poor. This means to side with the truth. To go with the the side of justice and defend the ones being treated wrong. They were commanded not to do wrong or violence nor shed innocent blood. In yesterday's devotional, we understand that sometimes kingdoms will face open war, where blood will eventually be spilled. But in the event that blood is shed, let there be none spilled from the innocent.
