Creating own monument?

Writer's picture: Michael CustodioMichael Custodio

Thus says the Lord GOD of hosts, “Come, go to this steward, to Shebna, who is over the household, and say to him: What have you to do here, and whom have you here, that you have cut out here a tomb for yourself, you who cut out a tomb on the height and carve a dwelling for yourself in the rock? Isaiah 22:15-16 ESV

Monuments are built in memory of heroes whose accomplishments have outlived them. Even generations after people died, there are still people who had passed the stories to the next generations that it became legends. The monuments and honor was accorded to them by people several generations after they have died. God has no problem about that. He even says let the lips of another praise you, not your own. So, being recognized for what a person does and being remembered for it is noble, On the other hand, trying to build your own tomb, own monument, own symbol to be remembered by yourself, while you are still alive is nothing more than a thirst and insecurity for power. Shebna was rebuked for cutting his own memorial symbol. placing it on the heights.

Let's just do the honorable things. If we are remembered for it, so be it, if not, God sees what is done in secret. There is no need to promote ourselves, build our own memorials, and display our hunger and thirst for recognition. It only brings destruction. 14 Aug
