And David said to Saul, “Let no man's heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” 1 Samuel 17:32 ESV
One act of bravery can remove the fear in the hearts of other people. Here the whole army of Israel have been gripped with fear because of Goliath. Probably not just because of the size of the enemy but because of what was at stake as well. It was not just the life of the soldier that was on the line. The lives of the entire nation was at stake in this fight. Thus, king Saul together with the entire army of Israel was full of fear. Now, on top of that, here comes a ruddy, handsome young man, full of valor, full of guts, full of expectations, willing to risk it all for the name of the God of Israel. We might think he was simply after the reward, “what will be done to the one who kills this Philistine?”. We might even think he is looking for a life more interesting than taking care of the flock or the sheep. But all of those reason become secondary to the true intentions of David. The main reason was indignation because the name of God was being defied. “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” David can not withstand that the name of the Lord be taken in vain and challenged and ridiculed publicly. There are moments that you and I may not be courageous as others, but when the name of Lord is on the line, there are times like you and I would feel an injection or infusion of courage from on high that we feel we can face anything for the sake of the Name of the Lord. 26 March
