Broken spirit, a contrite heart.

Writer's picture: Michael CustodioMichael Custodio

For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Psa 51:16-17 ESV

We can not buy our way into repentance. some people buy their way in to join a club, an organization, a team, an elite group. Some people think their money can always buy their way in and that everything and everyone has a price. Here David is saying we can not buy our way into repentance. It can not be done by animal sacrifices. It can not be done by simply bringing the sacrifices for God won't be pleased by it. What God want is a broken spirit, a broken heart, and a contrite heart. A broken spirit that when broken by God are broken in all the right places. If we yield ourselves to God. we may be broken, but in all the right places and he will restore us. If we break ourselves because we are stubborn, we will eventually break but still in the wrong places and who will heal or restore us. We need to take pride away from the equation and come to God in humility, repentance, and brokenness when we sin. our names, titles, positions, and sacrifices won't matter. God wants a heart that is truly repentant before Him. That is something God will never despise. 25 June.
