Boundary stone.

Writer's picture: Michael CustodioMichael Custodio

You shall not move your neighbor's landmark, which the men of old have set, in the inheritance that you will hold in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess. Deuteronomy 19:14 ESV

Boundaries are set for a reason. They define the limits and end points of what is and what is not. Here, the command was never to move the landmark of your neighbor. This can suggest at least two applications. Never push the boundaries of what does not belong to you. When you push the boundary stone of your neighbor, you are taking what originally belongs to him. You are trying, not by legal means, take away a portion of a property that does not belong to you in the first place. This can be equated to taking and stealing from someone. You may not be taking the whole land, but by stealing a portion on the land makes the person as equally guilty of grabbing land that does not belong to them.

Another application is never to push the boundaries of God. When people justify their actions by pushing God’s boundaries, that’s when problem begins. When God said our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit, we can not justify drinking, vices, drug abuse, and abusing our bodies. When God says do not commit sexual immorality, nobody can justify that they are not having adultery because they have not committed the sexual act itself but they they have pushed the boundaries of physical expression of intimacy, the only thing they have not done was the actual sexual act but had been involved in pornography, heavy petting and the likes, they have pushed boundaries as far as they can push it. Again, when God sets the boundaries for our lives, never push it back. Just trust Him and put His agenda before our own. Even when the flesh wants it so bad, we don't push back God's boundaries. 27 February
